Quoting the PHP 7 release note on Zend:

This is the most important change for PHP since the release of PHP 5 in 2004. … You can expect to see up to 2x faster performance and 50% better memory consumption than PHP 5.6, allowing you to serve more concurrent users without adding any hardware

This basic level tutorial will explain how Joomla interacts with PHP and how to update to PHP 7.

Joomla and PHP

PHP is a server-side programming language. Using PHP in Joomla allowed Joomla's developers to dynamically generate HTML, communicate with a database, and preform other complicated processes. Joomla uses PHP but it doesn't have PHP installed. Instead, PHP is installed on the server (or local XAMPP, WAMPP server), usually run by hosting companies. So Joomla is dependent on having a server environment that installs and processes PHP requests. Please follow these steps to get your Joomla fully and securely updated with PHP 7

Step 1: Update to Joomla 3.5

PHP 7 was released on Dec 03, 2015, but older versions of Joomla do not support it. So latest Joomla version 3.5 has already built-in compatibility with PHP. So in order to ultilize, you need to update your site to stable Joomla 3.5 first which was released on March 9th, 2016

Step 2: Update extensions

After updating your Joomla version, you should update your extensions to to ensure compatibility.

Step 3. Ask your host to perform the update to PHP 7

As explained in the first section, PHP is installed and run on your server. Therefore, Only the hosting provider can help. And server set ups vary from company to company. As a result, by far the easiest approach is to ask your hosting company's support to do it for you. Most hosts will be able to perform the update for you quickly. JoomlaGroup.com was hosted by A2 Hosting which already support PHP 7, no question asked !. Any I suggest you to ask your host if it already supports latest and fastest PHP version 7!
